Captain Russell Tharin's
Biography
1956 Russell Tharin was born in Jacksonville, Florida. Russell's grandfather had purchased 19 acres in the late 30's on the St. Johns River at Solano Cove, about 15 miles west of St Augustine. As very young child Russell hunted and fished with his father and grandfather, spending much of his time outdoors.
1966 Russell purchased his first fly rod and found himself consumed with fly fishing.
1979 Russell enlisted into the USMC and received extensive training as a Marine Scout Sniper.
1988 Russell became a charter member and later, president of the First Coast Fly Fishing Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
1992 Russell got his U.S.C.G. six-pak license to charter and guide. Also at this same time Capt. Russell joined The Federation of Fly Fishers and was certified as a Fly Casting Instructor. Capt. Russell now holds the designation as a "Master Fly Casting Instructor".
1997 Capt. Russell moved to Amelia Island, Florida and started guiding fulltime as a charter captain.
1998 Capt. Russell was very proud to become an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide.
1999 Capt. Russell attended the Joan Wulff School of Fly Fishing, Fly Casting Instructor Course, taught by Joan Wulff.
2004 Capt. Russell was recognized as the "Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide of the Year" at the company's annual gathering in Bozeman, Montana. The Orivs-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide of the Year is awarded based on the sum total of favorable reports filed directly to the Orvis Company upon completion of a guided trip. Each year the Orvis Company recognizes one extraordinary individual guide for providing a consistently world class fishing experience meets or exceeds standards set by the company. Capt. Russell received the highest ratings from among 1200 guides in the Orvis-Endorsed program.
2009 Capt. Russell upgraded this USCG license to a 50-ton "Masters" license.
2010 Capt. Russell became the Northeast Florida regional captain for the "Chevy Florida Insider Fishing Report" with host Captain Rick Murphy. The show has 9 Florida regional charter fishing captains that give their live weekly fishing reports from around the state, airing Thursday, Friday and Saturday on Sun Sports.
2011 Capt. Russell was sponsored by Yamaha, Skeeter Boat Co and St. John Power Sports, as a Pro Team member. The Skeeter Boat Co is on the cutting edge within the bay boat industry. I am very proud to be on this great team and run the New 2012 Skeeter ZX 24v, powered by a 300hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard, the boat is loaded with great features like a 101 Minn Kota trolling motor, dual Power Poles, Humminbird sonar and gps.
Capt Russell has fished on the Gulf Coast, the Florida Keys, east coast of Florida, Southeast Georgia and enjoys offering his services as a guest speaker to clubs and organizations.
Best of all, Capt. Russell met and married the catch of his life, Janet. Janet booked Capt. Russell because he was a guide for a fly fishing charter, they became best friends, fishing buddies and soul mates for life.
