Light Tackle Fishing And Fly Fishing Charters

With Capt. Russell Tharin

Captain Russell Tharin, Amelia Island Florida
Captain Russell Tharin
We like to fish with light tackle and fly in the backcountry flats, inshore and nearshore of Amelia Island. We can fish redfish and sea trout all year long in the tidal saltwater marsh and flats of Amelia Island. This type of fishing has all the elements of hunting. If we have the right tides I love sight fishing by stalking, making stealthy presentations, and seeing the fish eat and strike with heart-pounding hookups. Redfish are large and numerous here and they can be caught under several different and exciting scenarios. Nowhere in the state of Florida do you have the tides that range from 5' to 7' in a 6 hour period. This means that we must be in the right place at the right time. There is no best season because Redfish do not migrate and fishing can be good all year long, as weather permits.

There are mainly three ways that we can sight fish for redfish. First, I would like to start fishing about two or three hours before the dead low. As the tide drops the fish will move from the high water locations using the routes that they moved in on the flood tide, also the fish will congregate in a safe and comfortable location. As incoming tide floods the flats the redfish will scatter as they move with the tide to feed, stay warm or just to stay safe in the shallow water. Second, in spring, summer, and fall, we can also sight fish redfish in the surf on the incoming flood tides, as long as we have clear water and clear sunny days. Wading works the best here. Third, is to fish the high flood tides in the marsh. Spring, summer, and fall are the best time of year for redfish and sheepshead, tailing in the grass. This is also some of best sight fishing for redfish we have wading can be optional.

The spring, summer, and fall on Amelia Island are the best seasons to sight fish along the beaches and nearshore for a variety of pelagic species like bluefish, cobia, jack crevalle, false albacore, ladyfish, spanish mackerel, sharks and tarpon. These fish can be found around, or under, and striking into bait pods. We can find these bait pods and striking fish on the surface by watching for diving birds.

Capt. Russell and Janet will be taking reservations for light tackle fishing, saltwater fly fishing charters, photography tours, eco tours, and fly casting lessons on Amelia Island Florida.
